Western Cape SAPS management has instituted an internal investigation following a video depicting a police vehicle in the presence of two naked men being assaulted by Delft community members.

The investigation was initiated when the video, that has been circulating on social media, was brought to the attention of officials. The video further shows one police officer standing next to the vehicle, which can later be seen reversing from the scene.

Police spokesperson, Brigadier Novela Potelwa stated that a preliminary investigation into the incident revealed the following:

* The incident occurred on 25 February 2021 at the N2 Gateway in Delft at approximately 06:50 in the morning.

* One of the assault victims died in hospital shortly after the attack while the other sustained serious injury.

* Six men were subsequently charged for murder and attempted murder following the assault. The case is still ongoing and the suspects’ next appearance will be on 9 May 2021.

“The internal probe is currently focussing on the police’s initial response to the crime scene in an effort to determine whether the first responders acted accordingly from the time they arrived on the scene of crime. Also whether the police on the scene asked for backup and what transpired thereafter,” said Potelwa.

Other concerns pending the investigation is determining what else occurred on the scene that the video did not capture.
