Members attached to Manenberg SAPS seized unlicensed firearms and ammunition during their operations on Monday. Two suspects were apprehended, of which one was out on parole.
During their investigations, Manenberg detectives followed the 26-year-old suspect, in an unmarked police vehicle, as he was walking down Ganubie Road. After the suspect spotted the car, he tried to flee but was apprehended. The suspect was found with a pistol with the serial number had been removed and five rounds of ammunition.
“Upon further investigation, the Manenberg SAPS detectives profiled the suspect and established that the suspect was out on parole for a similar charge of possession of firearm and ammunition. The 26-year-old male’s parole will immediately be revoked,” Captain FC van Wyk announced.
The suspect will be charged with possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.
In a separate incident, members from the Crime Prevention Unit arrested a 28-year-old man during a stop and search operation at around 13:45.
“Upon their arrival at Joyce Court, they saw a male acting suspiciously who subsequently attempted to evade SAPS members by running away. Members gave chase and apprehended the suspect who was found to be in possession of a 9mm Taurus Pistol and eleven 9mm rounds of ammunition, 17 units of whoonga, crushed mandrax and dagga. The serial number of the firearm was partially removed,” van Wyk reports.
The 28-year-old was charged with the illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition, possession of a prohibited firearm and possession of drugs.
Both suspects will be expected to appear in the Athlone Magistrate’s Court once charged.
