Yesterday the Swellendam Magistrate’s Court released a 48-year-old man out on bail with stringent conditions for contravening the Film and Publication Act by reportedly having child pornography in his possession.
The man was arrested on Wednesday, 17 March on a farm outside Swellendam in the Overberg district.
“His arrest follows a joint effort by members of the Provincial Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit based in Cape Town in collaboration with Home Land Security from the American Embassy who executed a search warrant following intelligence obtained that the suspect frequented an American chat room where participants share explicit sexual talks and footage of minors,” Captain Malcolm Pojie reports.
The team searched the man’s house and seized all electronic equipment including mobile phones and tablets. The devices will be analysed to determine the extent of the suspect’s involvement.
“The suspect appeared in the Swellendam Magistrates’ Court this morning and was granted bail of R 2 000, with conditions not to have any contact with minors/children, with the exception of his own children. Furthermore, he is not allowed to visit any website nor pornographic sites,” Pojie says.
The case has been postponed to 13 May 2021 to allow for further investigation.
