Gas bottle explosion at Stellenbosch home leads to discovery of abalone

While attending to a gas bottle explosion at a home in Stellenbosch on Wednesday morning, police discovered large quantities of abalone.

Police also discovered equipment for its processing while investigating the events surrounding the fire.

At approximately 00:03 the police arrived at the residence in Cynaroides Road Paradyskloof. At the time the fire brigade was on the scene trying to enter the residence to extinguish the fire.

During their investigations around the incident, the officers came across large quantities with a street value of about R 900 000 and abalone drying equipment valued at R 60 000.

Police’s Colonel Andrè Traut reports that two men, aged 23 and 26, were arrested for the illegal possession of abalone.

The search continues for the man in whose name the property was leased.

The arrested are expected to appear in a Stellenbosch court once they have been charged.
