Fishing vessel in Gordon’s Bay harbour catches alight

The NSRI has reported that on Saturday 27 March 2021, at approximately 13:16, the Gordon’s Bay duty crew were activated as a result of reports of a fishing vessel that had caught alight in the Gordon’s Bay harbour.

NSRI Gordon’s Bay crew, GB Med Sec ambulance services, CoCT (City of Cape Town) Fire and Rescue Services, and the SA Police Services responded.

As the NSRI crew and paramedics raced to the scene of the burning fishing vessel, they were stopped along the way by a vehicle that was transporting a burn patient to the hospital. The patient was a casualty of the burning fish vessel.

The patient was attended to by the GB Med Sec ambulance and taken to the hospital. The patient is said to be in a serious condition.

By the time the NSRI crew, the Fire Department, and emergency services arrived at the harbour the moored fishing vessels’ fire had been extinguished. Precautions were initiated to prevent the fire from flaring up on the fibreglass vessel.

NSRI said that while it appears that the fire started during refuelling further investigations by authorities will determine the cause of the fire.
