On Sunday, a fire broke out at D.A.G Exclusive Furniture, a well-known furniture shop in Victoria Road, Woodstock.

News24 reports that Jermaine Carelse, the Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson, said the City received a call after 11:00.

“Salt River and Roeland Street Fire Station crews were dispatched to the incident,” said Carelse. “When the officer in charge arrived on the scene he immediately called for additional resources.”

According to the Daily Voice, owners Nizar and Gadija Moosa from Kenwyn built their furniture store from nothing 18 years ago.

“Nobody was hurt alhamdulillah, no fatalities. The factory is burnt completely. But the showroom at least is fine,” said Fatima Allie, the sister of one of the owners. “It happened so fast.”

Firefighters were able to contain the fire after 13:02, reports News24.

The furniture store was also busy with an important hotel contract, reported the Daily Voice. “Most of [the hotel pieces] were in the factory shop and only a percentage of the stuff was in the showroom,” mentions Allie.

The publication also reported that D.A.G Exclusive Furniture employed 30 to 35 people, which included casual workers.

“These are people with families. This is a local business that went up in flames,” said Allie.

Allie stated the reason for the fire was still being determined.

While thanking the community for their support, Allie added, “This is going to be a long and difficult way forward. We just ask the community to keep the family in prayer.”
