Body of an unidentified female retrieved from Sea Point surfline

On Sunday, 10 January at approximately 10:53 the NSRI crews received an alert reporting that a body had been seen floating in the Surfline in front of the Sea Point Swimming Pool.

An NSRI Bakoven sea rescue craft was in the area at the time and diverted to investigate the report.

A massive rescue attempt involving the NSRI Bakoven and NSRI Table Bay rescue swimmers, the SA Police Services, a Clifton Lifesaving rescue RHIB (rigid hull inflatable boat), CoCT (City of Cape Town) Fire and Rescue Services, WC Government Health EMS, a CoCT Fire and Rescue Services Dive Unit, a Police Dive Unit and Community Medics was conducted. CoCT lifeguards and CoCT Law Enforcement officers were also on the scene.

In a statement by the NSRI, Marc de Vos, NSRI Table Bay station commander said, “Unconfirmed reports suggested that a body of an unidentified female was on the beach and on investigation it was confirmed that the body of an unidentified female was still in the surfline.”

The body of the female was taken into the care of WC Government Health Forensic Pathology Services.”

An inquest document has been lodged. SAPS will investigate the circumstances around the death of the woman.
