A hearse transporting a body spontaneously caught fire on Saturday morning, in Paarl East. It was previously reported that the body perished in the flames, however, Willy’s & Gallico Funeral Services released a statement stating otherwise.

Willy’s & Gallico Funeral Services posted on Facebook: “The incident occurred whilst one of our experienced drivers, Brandon Fortuin was on his way to drop the body of the deceased at one of our loyal families to pay their final respects. The vehicle was totally destroyed. However we can confirm, that the driver and body of the deceased is unharmed . . .”

The Drakenstein Municipality’s fire services were alerted to the burning vehicle at 08:14 in Broadway Street. The fire services managed to extinguish the blaze.

The funeral service was able to make alternative arrangements and the mourning family was still able to view the body.

They’ve also asked that people refrain from spreading the initial reports, and instead refer to their statement released on Facebook.

Willy’s & Gallico also stated that their vehicles are regularly serviced and that this  “inexplicable incident” is “beyond human control”. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
