The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid) will be investigating the alleged suicide of the primary suspect linked to the five Mthwalume murders.

The suspect was expected to appear in the Umzumbe Magistrate’s Court on Monday after he reportedly confessed to his involvement in four of the murders in the area before he was returned to his cell after midnight on Sunday. According to reports, the suspect was found hanging from a showerhead; he used the string from his tracksuit pants. Paramedics and pathologists announced him dead on the scene.

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) said that the case against the second suspect was not enrolled due to insufficient evidence.

A 24-hour mobile police station has been set up in the community to increase police visibility. Police officers will also be deployed to patrol the sugar cane field where the bodies of five women have been found since the start of the national lockdown.

Minister of Police Bheki Cele says that the police will continue their investigation.
