A total of forty-six boxes of illegal Rothmans cigarettes, worth R1.3 million has been confiscated during a patrol on the border between South Africa and Mozambique.

SANDF members are deployed at the border to counter illicit goods and undocumented people from entering SA. Earlier this week they spotted two vehicles transporting the illegal goods along the border.

SANDF spokesperson, Captain Anelisiwe Tamela, says, “When approached, the suspects fled the scene and 46 boxes of Rothmans cigarettes and an Isuzu bakkie were found and taken in.”

In May, SANDF members seized a large number of cigarettes, drugs and a vehicle at the Tell Bridge Port of Entry between the Eastern Cape and Lesotho.

In another patrol, officers found boxes of cigarettes and crates of beer. It was suspected that the items were waiting to be collected and smuggled over the border.
