The Alexandra, Randburg, Midrand, Sandton Taxi Association (Armsta) says that the government is to blame for its 172% taxi fare increase, which it plans to impose on commuters next week.

The taxi association says they have been left with no choice but to take this extreme measure to remain operational. They announced that from 15 June, Alexandra commuters will have to pay R30 for a single trip to Sandton instead of R11 that’s a R19 increase.

Armsta’s chairperson Victor Moekeletsi says the 172% fare increase is an attempt to get the government’s attention to provide the taxi industry with the relief it was promised by Transport Minister Fikile Mbalula.

Moekeletsi said it is unfortunate that commuters are now causalities caught in the war between the Transport Department and the taxi association.

Armsta says it is waiting for the government to respond before the price hike comes into effect next week.
