Five Suspects Arrested in Mitchell’s Plain for Alleged Copper Cable Theft

According to the SAPS, five men between the ages of 23 and 42, were arrested on Thursday for damaging and removing rail infrastructure and possession of supposed stolen copper cables.

The Police acted on information they received about the suspects busy removing copper cables from the Mitchell’s Plain railway line adjacent to 7th Avenue in Eastridge.

Upon arrival, Police found two men next to the railway line with a large number of copper cables in their possession. They followed up on more information and ended up in a nearby street in Eastridge where they found three more suspects also with copper cables in their possession.

The Police confiscated about 120m of Centenary and Overhead cables with an estimated street value of R80 000.

“The suspects appeared in the Mitchell’s Plain Magistrate’s Court on charges relating to the Criminal Amendment ACT (causing damage and tampering with rail infrastructure) and possession of presumed stolen property.”
