According to a SAPS media statement, 15 suspects were arrested on Wednesday after being involved in taxi violence in Mbekweni.
SAPS members were called to Mbekweni Railway Station after a shooting incident.
The statement read, “A 49-year-old suspect from Mbekweni was arrested in possession of a 9mm Norinco, and a magazine with nine rounds. A second arrest occurred where a 62-year-old taxi driver of Khayelitsha was arrested and several 9mm and R5 rounds were found on the scene. A 26-year-old bystander (woman) was wounded and a 40-year-old taxi owner-driver was found deceased in a shack as a direct result of the shooting.”
The taxis then attempted to flee the scene but got caught on the corners of New and Lady Grey Streets at the Paarl taxi rank where 13 suspects between the ages of 24 and 48 of Khayelitsha were arrested for the possession of ammunition and a 9mm firearm.
A 48-year-old suspect who was arrested was found wounded in a taxi and was taken to a nearby medical facility and is now under police guard.
Also, two officers were involved in an accident on their way to the scene. They suffered mini injuries and was taken to a medical facility.
As soon as the suspects are charged, they will be expected to appear in court on charges of murder, attempted murder, possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition in the Paarl Magistrate’s Court.
