On Monday, the governing body of football, FIFA, proposed that 5 substitutions be allowed per match instead of 3 to help players cope once football matches resume.

According to reports, a FIFA spokesperson said that once matches resume, players will be under a lot of pressure due to the higher number of matches they are expected to play.

Therefore this proposal is meant to reduce the increased risk of injury players will be subjected to.

FIFA approached the International Football Association Board (IFAB) to temporarily adjust Law 3, which currently allows for a maximum of three substitutions per team, and instead allow for five substitutions during the match and an additional one during added time.

FIFA’s proposal is pending approval from the IFAB.
