Department of Basic Education Minister, Angie Motshekga, says they have suggested the return date for grades 7 and 12 to be 1 June.
On Thursday, Motshekga said their plan, which includes dates and logistics, is subject to approval from the National Command Council, thereafter it will be gazetted and final announcements will be made by cabinet.
The minister clarified that the proposal to open the sector on 4 May does not mean kids would return to school, she says the sector needs to be open so that the first officials can go in and prepare for the academic year to continue.
Proposed Phased Calendar
- 4 May: Senior Officials
- 11 May: School Management
- 18 May: Teachers
- 1 June: Grade 7 and 12
Motshekga said this phased approach would help the department better prepare for the re-opening of the school year.
Standard Operating Procedures
The proposed plan contains, what the DBE refers to as, “Standard Operating Procedures” which have been developed to help fight the spread of the Coronavirus once schools re-open.
An awareness program will be launched for parents and Life Skills will be used to contain stigmatisation.
Minister Motshekga reiterated that this plan is a proposal subject to approval from the NCC and final decisions will be announced by cabinet.
