According to reports, school holidays may be scrapped in order to recover lost time in the 2020 academic year.

This is only one of the proposals being considered by the Department of Basic Education (DBE) as it contemplates the best way to salvage the 2020 academic year.

Spokesperson for the DBE, Elijah Mhlanga, reportedly said, “The 2020 academic year is possible and we will rescue it. We have a plan in place to rescue lost time. One of our plans might be to do away with the coming school holidays to recover lost time,”

According to Mhlanga, a team of experts are currently working on a plan for the reopening of schools.

He added that they have online, radio and television educational programmes available to assist pupils during the lockdown.

With the lockdown extended to end April, South African schools will have been closed for more than six weeks.
