Minister of Public Works and Infrastructure, Patricia de Lille, has placed Director-General of the Department, Advocate Sam Vukela, on precautionary suspension following reports of irregularities pertaining to state funerals and hiring of senior management.

De Lille said in a media statement, “This action follows a Minute I received from President Cyril Ramaphosa on 17 March 2020 to inform me of his decision to delegate his powers to the Minister of Public Works and Infrastructure to initiate disciplinary processes against the Director-General,”

The Minister says that the precautionary suspension follows reports into two investigations. The first includes a report by PriceWaterhouse Coopers who investigated allegations into the provision of infrastructure for official state funerals.

The second is an investigation by the Public Service Commission who looked into “irregular appointments” made in the Senior Management Service of the Department.

A senior advocate will chair the proceedings of the internal disciplinary process and the Department says it will not be making further comments until the process is concluded.
