CAPE TOWN – The City of Cape Town has proposed a water and sanitation rates increase of 26.9% across the city during this financial year.
Mayor Patricia de Lille laid out Cape Town’s provisional budget on Wednesday afternoon. The provisional budget is for the 2018/2019 financial year.
In tabling the budget, de Lille stated that the tariffs -which are set annually- are to keep the City on track with the level of service needed for all residents.
The lengthy drought in Cape Town has been to blame for the now much publicised ‘Day Zero’ plans; which is the day the City is predicted to completely run out of water.
The fact that the tariff hike affects other areas too, makes the announcement on Wednesday a tough pill to swallow for many Capetonians.
Electricity increasing by 8.1%, rates by 7.2% and refuse by 5.7% adds to this announcement of water and sanitation going up by 26.9%.
De Lille said that the proposals in the 2018/2019 budget will be open for residents to provide feedback on.
