A criminal case was opened against a KwaZulu Natal-based woman who allegedly called President Cyril Ramaphosa an ape via social media.

The comment was reportedly seen on a local Facebook group, where the woman referred to Ramaphosa as an ape who was trying to act like a first world president.

SAPS spokesperson, Brigadier Vishnu Naidoo, confirmed that the case was opened at the Brighton Beach Police Station. The case involves a charge of crimen injuria, meaning that the dignity of another was imposed on.

According to an interview with TimesLIVE, the woman said the comment was blown out of proportion and that things were taken too far.

The woman has since deactivated her Facebook account and no arrests have been made.
