According to reports, cocaine to the value of R30 million was seized by the Hawks on Sunday morning.
Thirty-eight 1kg packages of cocaine were allegedly found when the truck carrying it was stopped on the N1 en route to Cape Town during the early hours of Sunday morning.
The Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation intercepted the cocaine worth more than R30.4 million at a fuel station close to Cape Town. A 37-year-old man who allegedly went to the garage to pick up the drugs was arrested. He is expected to appear in court on Tuesday.
Nkwalase said the driver of the truck had not been arrested as the transport company was unaware that they were being used to move the cocaine.
Hawks spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Philani Nkwalase, said preliminary investigations have revealed the container was brought into the country from abroad and “transited through different provinces before making its way to Cape Town”.
