Cape Town Police Officer Killed While on Duty

38-year-old Constable Thando Sigcu was shot and killed while on duty in the CBD on Tuesday, 7 January.

Reports suggest that Sigcu was apprehending a robbery suspect in Heerengracht Street, Cape Town, at around 9 pm. It is believed that two City of Cape Town law enforcement officers joined him at the scene. According to News24, shots were fired which caused the suspect to sustain serious injuries and fatally wounding Constable Sigcu. They also reported that the City of Cape Town’s Safety and Security Directorate has confirmed that the shots were indeed fired by a law enforcement officer.

According to the Police, Constable Sigcu was stationed at Cape Town Central Police Station for the past 5 years and was fulfilling his crime prevention duties in the CBD, when the incident took place. The exact details of the incident are uncertain but the case is being investigated by the Hawks.

News24 reports that Provincial police commissioner Lieutenant-General Yolisa Matakata expressed her heartfelt condolences to the family and said: “employee health and wellness professionals would provide the necessary support to his family and colleagues.”
