On Sunday the popular chef, television personality and cookbook author from Bonteheuwel, Florence “Aunty Flori” Schrikker, passed away at the age of 67.
Aunty Flori was well-known for sharing her cooking along with Koelsoem “Koeli” Kamalie, who also passed away earlier this year.
“When one thinks of Flori, you automatically also think of Koelsoem, as these two neighbours took all of us with them on their journey from their homes to various stages and screens across the country. They became synonymous with good food, warm welcomes and many entertaining moments. Most of all, they were always extremely authentic and kind to all of those they met,” the Western Cape MEC for Cultural Affairs and Sport, Anroux Marais, says.
Bonteheuwel Ward Councillor, Angus Mckenzie, wrote a tribute on Facebook saying, “As a community, we are comforted by the fact that [they] will be serving the heavens with some of the best cuisines. Aunty Flori passing is a huge shock to the community and in our sadness, we want to thank her family for sharing her, her talents and her love with each and every one of us”.
Aunty Flori will be remembered as a local legend.
