Bail has been set at R500 for a Stellenbosch University student who allegedly sexually and physically assaulted a fellow student.
The final year medical student appeared in the Bellville Magistrate’s Court on Friday following allegations that he assaulted a fellow student on campus.
The court set bail which the State did not oppose, on the condition that he not make contact with the complainant or visit her address.
Stellenbosch University said the student has been temporarily suspended, pending a disciplinary investigation.
The anti-gender-based violence movement at the institution has criticised the university’s response, saying management took too long to react.
It was not immediately clear whether or not the 26-year-old, who was arrested on Thursday, has made bail and been released.
According to the National Prosecuting Authority, the matter has been postponed until 14 September for consultation.
