CAPE TOWN – A 40 year cyclist has died in a collision at the Cape Argus Cycle Tour.
The Cycle Tour confirmed that the incident took place at Wynberg Hill and involved 20 cyclists.
“One of the cyclists, a 40 year old male, received immediate medical attention at the scene but, tragically, his injuries proved fatal,” the organisers said in a statement.
His identity has not yet been revealed and there are no other reported fatalities.
This year’s Cycle Tour has over 35 000 participants and is in it’s 40th year. The first race started at 6:15am on Sunday, with Cape Town mayor Patricia De Lille being one of the dignitaries to welcome the first group.
The media is to be briefed at 3pm, according to the tour organisers.
