A 10-year-old boy reportedly went missing on Wednesday after falling into the water on the outside of the harbour wall.

Deon Langenhoven, National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) Hermanus station commander, said in a statement that, “The child had been fishing with friends at the harbour wall. It appears that as they were preparing to go home the child may have slipped and fallen into the water.”

The NSRI Hermanus duty crew were alerted at 16h44 on Wednesday and the local divers initiated a search in the water. They were later joined by the Western Cape Government Health EMS and the SA Police Services.

Despite an extensive search, there has been no sign of the boy but Police divers are continuing the search. An investigation has been opened.

Langenhoven said their thoughts are with the family and friends of the missing child in this difficult time.
