The pandemic has brought many challenges, especially in the labour market. VK News previously reported that the unemployment rate is currently the highest it’s ever been since 2008. According to Stats SA, our economy shed 2,2 million jobs in the second Quarter of 2020.
More people are actively seeking work opportunities in a time where businesses are struggling to stay afloat. This does mean that the competition is fierce. You have to be strategic in your approach and the type of jobs you’re applying for. Here are a few tips to help guide you and hopefully help you land that job.
Tip number 1
Study the job description carefully. You can’t simply skim through it and expect to get a positive result. Each company is different and has different requirements. An updated CV and a SWOT analysis as interview prep will only get you so far.
Tip number 2
As I said previously, each organisation has its own culture. Therefore, you can’t send the same CV to all the job postings out there. Customise and tweak it to fit the requirements of the job advertised. This will give you a better chance at an interview.
Tip number 3
Great, you landed an interview. What you have to do now, is to get an understanding of the company. Go on their website and do your research. Get as much information about the services they offer. It’s important to know who their customers are. Read their blog if they have one. This will help you get your marketing pitch ready.
Tip number 4
Should your interview be virtual due to the current situation, be prepared. Make sure you have a good webcam, angle at eye level and that you’re seated in a room with good lighting. Ensure that your background is somewhat professional, preferably a wall.
Tip number 5
After the interview it’s important to debrief. Go over what was asked and see what you could have done or said differently. This will prepare you for the next interview, if this one did not work out in your favour.
Tip number 6
Don’t underestimate the power of networking. In your process of active search, take small risks daily. Stay connected to people and tweak your LinkedIn profile. Send connection requests to people in the industry you would like to grow in. Don’t be afraid to reach out to them and ask for advice. Very often you will be pleasantly surprised at the outcome.
Instead of asking why, change your mindset to how. A small shift in thinking and attitude makes a huge difference and might just help you land that desired position.
